How to dispose of dinnerware correctly
If you have acquired a new dinnerware set, it can sometimes be necessary to dispose of your old dinnerware. We explain below how to dispose of your old dinnerware sets properly.
Note on disposing of dinnerware
Where you can dispose of dinnerware that is no longer used depends mainly on the amount of dinnerware and the materials. If you only have one broken porcelain cup to dispose of, wrap it in old newspaper and put it in the residual waste. If you have larger quantities, you should always take your old dinnerware to a recycling center, which usually involves only low costs, or no costs at all. Disposal is also carried out professionally and correctly.
Alternative ways to dispose of dinnerware
Do you still have treasured old dinnerware in the attic that is too good to throw away? Then you should initially refrain from disposing of it. Instead, you could try reselling your fine dinnerware at a flea market or to an antique dealer. If you have some craft skills, you can reuse these items in new, original and creative designs.
Important notes on dinnerware disposal
Disposing of your dinnerware correctly is important for several reasons. In particular, you should dispose of heat-resistant and durable porcelain correctly. Never throw broken pieces of porcelain into the bottle bank, as this could render the recycled glass unusable. In the worst-case, it may disrupt the activities of a recycling center, as porcelain has a different melting point to glass. It is also important to note that drinking glasses have a different melting point to bottle glass, and therefore do not belong in a glass recycling container. Proper separation therefore contributes to the correct recycling of reusable materials and can help to reduce greenhouse gases. In Germany, certain materials such as glass must be disposed of properly, in accordance with Section 13 of the Packaging Act.
There is another reason why you should dispose of broken porcelain correctly: By doing so, you reduce the risk of injury to people and animals. Therefore, do not simply throw broken dinnerware in the waste bin, but wrap them in old newspaper, or scraps of cloth, to avoid anyone injuring themselves on the shards.
Smaller quantities of old dinnerware can be thrown away in the residual waste. All materials that cannot be incinerated may end up as construction waste. An exception to this is metallic dinnerware, which, in small quantities, belongs in the scrap metal container. Non-biodegradable disposable dinnerware, should be disposed of in the non-recyclable bin.
Do you have a lot of old plates and pots to dispose of? Always dispose of large quantities of old cups, pots and plates at the recycling center, not with residual or bulky waste. Not only porcelain dinnerware sets, but also individual pieces made of glass, ceramic, plastic, wood and earthenware should be disposed of at the recycling center.

Reusing dinnerware
Why dispose of high-quality dinnerware, for example with engravings or exclusive rims, when it can bring pleasure to others? In some cases, it makes sense not to dispose of old porcelain dinnerware immediately, but to donate them, sell them or incorporate them into creative DIY projects. For example, vases can be wonderfully repurposed as plant pots or containers for tea or spices. You could even "dispose of" your discarded porcelain dinnerware, in a creative way, at your next stag party.
Why it sometimes makes more sense to donate than to dispose
Old, intact dinnerware is often disposed of prematurely if it no longer suits personal tastes. However, have you thought of making someone else happy with your discarded dinnerware? There are many charitable organizations, such as Caritas, the Red Cross or charity department stores, which pass on discarded dinnerware in good condition to people in need at low cost.
Using old dinnerware at a wedding-eve party?
In Germany, many bridal couples regard the party on the eve of their wedding as a cherished tradition. Before the actual wedding ceremony, it is customary to wish the bride and groom good luck with broken dinnerware - but you don't have to invest in a new set of dinnerware. This creates a win-win situation for everyone: the bride and groom can enjoy the older dinnerware sets, and it is an easy opportunity for you to get rid of yours.
Can old porcelain dinnerware be of value to a collector?
Don't underestimate the value of your old dinnerware to a collector. For example, your grandparents' collections might be perfectly suitable to sell at an antique market or on an online platform. You can recognize specialized dinnerware by features such as a serial number. This applies to certain collectable dinnerware cups from Villeroy & Boch, which were originally more showpieces than for everyday use. Special limited editions of well-known brands are also highly sought after by collectors.
