BARBECUES ARE FOR THE OUTDOORS – BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN'T BE STYLISCH

How do you know when spring has arrived? Is it the first warm rays of sunshine, or the cheerful twitter of the birds, or the first green buds on the trees? All of those things count, but there is one sure sign that the snow and chill weather is over: the barbecue is awoken from its winter sleep.
Barbecues are one of the most popular ways of preparing food in the world – be it on the beach, in the park or in your own garden. They are uncomplicated, bring people together and can be the start of a great party. We would like to help you ensure that your first barbecue of the season is a feel-good outdoor event – and point out a few things you should pay attention to.

Dancing flames and fiery coals

The basic ingredients for a barbecue couldn’t be simpler: fire, food and a grill. You need to plan properly, however, so that the barbecue is at the right temperature. You should start the barbecue half an hour before you want to start cooking so that the coal is glowing properly. Only then should you put the food on the grill. As with all cuisine, different people have different tastes. Purists favour classics like steak, while gourmets might go for creations like baby squid with coriander and ginger filling. Whatever you are cooking, don’t compromise on the quality! You won’t know what’s in the marinade unless you have made it yourself; home-made salads are fresher; and self-prepared sauces generally taste better than ready-made ones.

Presenting the food

Eating outdoors is a relaxed affair: simply set up the benches and tables, add a couple of lanterns for the evening and perhaps some fresh lavender or daisies to set the spring mood. Keep the drinks cold and prepare the food. So far so good. But we believe that even a simple sausage looks better on a porcelain plate – Urban Nature from Villeroy & Boch, for example. The modern country range has numerous pieces including salad bowls, dip bowls and oval platters as the perfect serving plates for skewered meat. Take a look at the Villeroy & Boch range. You will discover other great ingredients for your barbecue made of porcelain, glass or stainless steel, like the BBQ tools from the One range.

Brown and crispy

Barbecuing is literally playing with fire. The food cooks quickly on the hot coals and needs therefore to be watched at all times. Caution is required: brown and crispy can quickly become burnt to a cinder. Surprises like this can be avoided with good planning. When you put the fish or meat on the grill, you should have everything you need to hand: spices, tongs, and serving platters. So what are you waiting for?
